I have been really into making these ancient stalks that need a ton of love and time to finish. I find these older stalks have the most dense wood from so many years baking in the sun and only a few make it through so many seasons of extreme heat and sometimes even very cold weather in these higher elevations as agave start to grow at around 5,000 ft. This one as you can see from one of the photos had a ton of insect and bird activity and a lot of turquoise inlaid. It looks so beautiful with the  varied wood grain of this agave which you can kind of tell from the photo but has light, dark, and even pinkish pigments throughout. F is such a powerful key and always the group favorite at a Reiki circle I sometimes play at. Makes sense being the heart chakra and this key just makes me feel so good and at peace. These bigger bore high notes have a sort of overtone in the drone and so mesmerizing to play in an ambient style. It can also play with great speed and volume with its incredible shape. Great vocals and overtones. Seeing and playing this in person you can feel its power and wisdom right away. If you haven’t explored these higher keys now is the time!

I had such an amazing fall harvest this year and did a lot of traveling while finding some great new honey holes. This is one that I was so excited to work on as it was unusual with its taper while still having really nice wood density. Making these thinner bore didges is actually the most technical as there is very little room for error when boring them out. This one was such a challenge and it was so worth it. This reminds me of one of my E’s I have in my personal collection. Almost exactly the same dimensions. It is one of two that  I  always bring with me when playing out because of its wide range of capabilities.  This one has amazing overtone and percussive capabilities and is just so easy to play at  extreme speeds while taking very little breath. Vocals are so bright with great volume and drone is just so sweet. I thought it would be really cool for a change to play right on the agave as the mouthpiece was already the perfect size. I always love carving wood mouthpieces and the look they add but I love the look and feel of playing right on the flower stalk.  If I didn’t have two E’s in my collection this would be added to it. An amazing didge!

As you can see this is such a unique and colorful stalk. I found this on a camping trip in one of the most beautiful parts of AZ. I ended up collecting a lot of really old stalks that had huge splits and cracks but when I knocked on them had such amazing resonance and forms that I collected them anyway. I have recently been working a ton on these older ones that seem to be gone forever but instead are turning into these amazing and unique instruments. This one has such amazing symmetrical curves and at one of its curves it split and scarred really badly but actually turned to a really hard inside the split. I was able to fill this with some hard to find sleeping beauty turquoise from right near by in Bisbee. The merlot pigments along with the whites and darks and turquoise make for an impressive art piece. It plays just as beautifully and this one reminds me of my only D in my personal collection. Nothing too flashy but when you play it you can just feel all the abilities it has. Amazing response with a mesmerizing drone, great vocals, easy overtones, and takes so little breath. I am so excited to see where this one ends up. As you can tell I so enjoyed making this one and now playing it!  A rare gem!!

Here it is…lucky #300! I don’t know really how else to describe this one other than it has a ton of personality! I can’t believe how responsive it is. This would be so great for the beginning player that is experimenting with new sounds as you will hear every tiny manipulation out that huge bell and inspires lots of creative ideas.  The most advanced player will surely find new sounds as well as this didge feels almost electric. It takes hardly any air and can play with such amazing speed. Outstanding vocals and plays so well in more acoustic and beat boxing styles as well as ambient with its deep drone full of bass. #300 registered in a little deeper C and a higher B so  has a unique sound quality to it.  In addition to all of its skills it is such a beautiful old stalk with a ton of color variation and many turquoise inlays where bugs once resided. This one will surely inspire lots of new sounds and rhythms for all levels!

This didge is a rhythm machine! As you can see from the dimensions this one is a pretty big deal:) Tremendous volume and power and plays like it has a built in amplifier. The drone has such a nice balance and incredible vocals that explode out of the big bell and nice clear overtones. Recording this I couldn’t believe how effortless it was to play in a quick explosive style. It would be such a great fit for any level of player and any style of play. It can just do everything so well and feels like it practically plays itself. On top of all this it is just a beautiful stalk with so many pigments and many turquoise inlays throughout. Some didges have all the luck!

This is one powerful agave! This Old Soul has  really dense, thick walls and a beautiful taper. Many Old Souls have termite activity on the inside similar to Eucalyptus and can  leave cool contours and add a different character to the drone. Also a with the bug activity on the inside I have inlaid a lot of beautiful turquoise that really pops against its beautiful varied wood grain. This one has perfect back pressure and takes hardly any breath to create its mesmerizing drone. Nice bright overtones as well and awesome vocals and a ton of volume. This would be a great one for any level and any style. It can do pretty much everything well and with its stature will hold up well to travel and playing shows. An incredibly fun and powerful didge that I am excited to see where its new home is going to be!

I absolutely love this didge! Many years ago a fellow didge player I ran into asked me my favorite key. Turns out C# was both our favorite. I just love the way the note makes feel and this one has something special about it. It is one of the easiest didges to play and has such perfect back pressure and requires so little breath. The drone is so strong with amazing vocal and overtone capabilities. I carved the mouthpiece a little different on this one and love the way it looks and Canary and Padauk accent the other so well. I would highly recommend this one to any player out there. I might end up keeping it if it stays on here for a while:)

As you can see from the photos there is a ton of turquoise inlaid throughout this beautiful Old Soul. My friend described it as a galaxy of turquoise:) I love the challenge and how time consuming these older stalks are to make. I am sure most agave makers would look at it and see too much work but I love the process of turning all the bug holes into inlays and see the old wood transform with all its cracks and weathered wood end up being a polished instrument. There are over 70 inlays in this one! It must have been a very popular hub for bugs as I haven’t seen that much activity in many stalks. I love working stone into the wood and reminds me of the short time I did silversmithing. C# is such an amazing key and my first key I really felt resonated with me when I first started playing. This one has such a beautiful balanced drone with awesome vocals and overtones. It has such a calming presence when played and such nice back pressure and and takes hardly any breath and responsive to any slight manipulation. I just recorded a new sample for this one as I hadn’t played it in a while. It is even more special than I initially realized and really think this would be great for someone using didge for sound therapy for ones self or others. One aspect I really like about its drone is that you can reach overtones within the drone with ease and also harmonizing vocals sound so cool. This would be a great didge for anyone and it really sings when you play it!

  • Key: C
  • Length: 55″
  • Bell: 3″
  • Mouthpiece: Walnut, Sapele
  • Back pressure: Strong
  • Skill level: Beginner to advanced

This travel size didge would be perfect for the ultimate beginner to start the journey with this instrument. Also would be great for any level for summer adventures as it is a great size to take hiking or camping. This is a really beautiful older stalk that had a ton of bug activity. These have all been filled with turquoise which adds so much to its appearance. These old stalks bake for years in the desert and become so dense and resonant. This one most likely survived 3 plus years and has nice thick walls that protected it. This one has such an easy drone, clear overtones, and great vocal abilities. For its size also has good volume. A great little didge ready to start an adventure!

This monster didge has very thin walls and with that huge bell has so much volume. It is light as a feather despite being over 6 feet in length and having that big bore and bell. Thinner walled agaves in general have a bit more volume and this one has really strong back pressure. It is crazy how little air is required to create such a strong drone. With the shape of this one it allows for some really nice explosive rhythmic ability as well. Vocals are so vibrant on these big agaves and responds so well to every type of manipulation from diaphragm to cheeks to tongue. If using for sound healing this would be great with its soothing bass tones, volume, and only weighs in at about 3lbs! Just such an easy and responsive didge to play and a great fit for all players of any style looking at a deeper key.

I put advanced on this one for skill level as the higher pitch notes require a bit more control. This one also has a little bigger mouthpiece at a 1 3/8″ to play in a more percussive style. I haven’t had a fusion on the site for a while and excited to add this one. I chose a thick really old stalk with a fast taper for the top and the bell is one that is part of a 30 ft agave which adds  nice bass and also acts as a sort of amp. This one has really easy overtones and percussive abilities with its shape. It can really play with pace and excels in a percussive quick rhythmic style. This would be an incredible performance didge or for playing in drum circles especially if no mic is available. Such a fun didge!
