Didgeridoo Maintenance

I often get asked about general maintenance and care. One great thing about these instruments is that they are pretty much maintenance free. Before I send them off I add a second coat of tung oil to the mouthpiece and shouldn’t have to reapply more unless you you really want to every few years. I haven’t added any to mine in over 10 years. If you do I use Milk Paint 100% tung oil. You can wipe on with a cloth and let sit for 20-30 minutes and then wipe off any excess oil left.

Make sure to store vertically after playing so air can flow through the didge and the saliva can dry and bacteria won’t be as likely to grow. These didges are completely waterproof so if you need to deep clean the inside I take a hose with a jet setting and can wash it out. I also use a dowel rod with a rubber stopper and cloth to wipe down the sides and can also do this anytime after playing. You can use a hair dryer on the cool setting to dry it out after cleaning or let air dry vertically, which as mentioned, should do after playing as well. I also dry off the outside and mouthpiece with a cloth. It is a good idea to clean them out every once and a while or if notice a smell. One tip also is to not play right after eating as can leave food particles that will cause bacteria to form. That’s really all there is to it!
