I have always loved these thicker old soul agaves. For one they have so much character in their appearance with so many stories to tell. They are more of a rare find as they are mostly from the monster agaves that shoot up incredible flowers that tower above the ocotillo and oak trees. They also have so much depth and personality in their drone. I found this one on a recent harvest and was the first one I worked on when I returned. In this area that I found this agave grow some of the largest agaves I have ever seen in the wild. This was an enormous stalk and this is the section near the top of the flower. This one has such an amazing feel to it with a powerful, bass filled, mesmerizing drone. I normally don’t recommend deeper keys to beginners but this one would work if it catches your ear. The ease it plays with is astounding and can play rhythms with no effort. The back pressure is perfect for this key and is so nice to circular breathe on and hold long notes with the little breath required. The overtones are amazing and so easy to sustain and the vocals really pop in contrast and harmony with its drone. Just such a powerful didge that would fit into any style of play!
